About Dr Ambaram

I have always had a passion for paediatrics, even prior to graduating with my MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2005. My journey in Paediatrics started when I did my Community Service at Stanger Hospital in Kwazulu Natal.

Thereafter I worked as a Senior Medical officer in the Department of Paediatrics at RK Khan Hospital in KZN. I then returned to Gauteng in 2009, where I specialized as a Paediatrician in the Wits circuit. Following this, I worked as a full time specialist paediatrician at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital until October 2016.

During this time I completed my training in Paediatric Rheumatology. At present, there are only 3 certified Paediatric Rheumatology subspecialists in Gauteng. I have been in private practice since March 2018 however I continue to work as a sessional Paediatrician and assists with the running of the Paediatric Rheumatology service at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

Paediatric Rheumatology involves treating kids not only with arthritis, but also many other autoimmune diseases and connective tissue disorders such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Sarcoidosis, Scleroderma, Vasculitis, Hypermobility as well as many new and emerging auto-inflammatory diseases.

I am currently serving as the South African Rheumatism Arthritis Association (SARAA) Paediatric Rheumatology subcommittee representative and am also actively involved in Arthritis Kids South Africa (AKSA) which is an organization that aims to create awareness of arthritis in children and offer support to our patients and families that have kids with arthritis.

I have 2 little boys of my own that keep me very busy and entertained when I am not working and if they permit me to, I enjoy taking some time out with some reading and running.
